He was around three years of age, in full leg braces suffering from polio, when his father passed away, after being paralyzed by a severe stroke. His mother then a still young beautiful wife was faced the impossible responsibility of bringing up his two elder sisters and Maurice. Whilst life in Mauritius was difficult for the young Maurice, there were some good times that he remembers fondly, and kept his spirits high.
For example, he has vivid and fond memories of playing soccer with his friends on the gravel road outside their house, being selected as school captain for three years in a row., captaining the soccer team to a historic inter-school victory. And of course, there was the relentless and unconditional love and affection of his mum and my two sisters, ho were always very close. At school, Maurice was always in the top five students. His scholastic achievement was a very important goal back home as it was seen as a passport to a better life for himself and the family. It was the smile on his families faces rather than the rewards at school that really drove Maurice forward. He had to work hard, and he had to succeed, and he had to surpass all odds just as his mum was doing for her children. With all that happening around him so fast, subconsciously Maurice took on the role of his father.
His inspirational life story often forms the foundations for his motivational speeches, and helps remind people of how we can, within ourselves, overcome difficulties in life. If you’d like to find out more, then visit Dr Maurice Roussety, Life Lessons from a Different Childhood.
